Project: ‘Hilliers’ Spring’ show garden at RHS Chelsea 2017

Designer/Client: Sarah Eberle/Hillier Nurseries

Designing this show garden was no mere task for lead designer, Sarah Eberle. Winning a gold medal would mean Hillier Nurseries 72nd consecutive gold and contribute towards her personal record of a triple double, furthering both parties unrivalled reputation at Chelsea. Failure clearly wasn’t an option.

Here at Loknan, our journey on this fantastic project started in Sarah’s kitchen back in 2016. As Sarah stretched out a slinky on her table to demonstrate her concept of creating a massive 4m steel spiral through the centre of her show garden, we felt confident that this garden was going to be an addition to an already unbroken track record!

Hillier Nurseries were awarded their 72nd consecutive gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

For the flooring in the pavilion area inside the giant spring, Sarah wanted to use our ‘Fast Click’ decking systems with the Bamboo boards to give the impression that the deck was floating in the middle of the structure. As curved cladding was required between the steel rings on the side of the spiral, our project team collaborated closely with Sarah and the fabrication company to come up with some ultra-thin bamboo boards that could be used in the radius.

Whilst various challenges presented themselves during the course of the project, we were able to overcome these thanks to working closely with the whole project team. Having input from all parties involved is hugely beneficial, giving us the opportunity to use our products in unique ways and demonstrate how capable our range is.

Behind the scenes…

Projects of this nature are particularly fascinating when you get an insight into what went into it’s creation. The huge steel spring in itself was an intriguing feat of engineering, even before the addition of the water feature! All of this detail took a lot careful planning and teamwork… but what a result!
